Amir Now?

After chapter 16, what are your thoughts on Amir's struggle with his own guilt at this point in the novel? Has America changed Amir? How? How has your opinion changed about him since he was a boy in Kabul? Do you think he can "be good again?"

  1. My thoughts on Amir have not really changed that much. I say that because when he was a young boy and all that bad stuff went down with Hassan Amir at the age he was he didn't know any better about what to do. Your average twelve year old boy who is in the same situation as Amir, watching his best friend get sexually assaulted in an alley by three guys; would not say anything because they more than likely would be in shock by what is happening.
I do believe that America has changed Amir in the sense that now he is a more mature and "better" person. I also think that the atmosphere of America changed him because where Amir grew up there was a lot hatred which led to civil wars. While in America there was peace and everyone liked everyone, yes there were still some minor issues with other races but it was not bad like it was in Kabul. My opinion on Amir has stayed the same throughout the book, I believe that he has always been a good person. He was just your average kid when he was younger, shy and then lying to help himself out, plenty of kids do that. So I believe that Amir has always been good.

  2. My thoughts on Amir have changed a little. Even though the things he did when he was a kid were immature and hurt Hassan. He now realizes that those things were not right, and regrets what he did. He wants to make things right with Hassan because he feels guilty about what he did. When the boys were twelve and Hassan got beat up by the trio in the alley, Amir did what every twelve year old would do, nothing. As Amir got older he regrets his actions.

Once Amir got to the United States it was in the 80s and the big thing during that time was peace. In Kabul there was a lot of violence and hatred when Amir was growing up. I believe that the United States changed Amir because of the peace. The American atmosphere changed Amir into a better person. Growing up in a country with a lot of violence is not easy. Amir moving to the United States made him realize what he did was wrong when he was twelve years old. He did what any normal teenage would do. Amir has always been a good person at heart it just took him awhile to find that in himself.

  3. I think up until the call from Rahim Khan, Amir has been trying to keep away from anything that would remind him of Hassan and what happened in the alley. To Amir, America was a new start. It got him always from all things that reminded him of Hassan and it with that, it helped make him forget the guilt of being a coward. America also allowed Amir to be a little closer with Baba and not having to worry about Hassan taking that relationship away from Amir.
My opinion has changed since he was younger because he matured from all the guilt and stress that was put onto him at a young age. He learned to forgive, like when his wife told him about how she lived with another man before she meet Amir, and to Afghans that was untraditional. But Amir forgave her because he know that everybody makes mistakes when they are young. I think he can be good and be relieved of a lot of guilt if he'd just confront Hassan and beg for forgiveness is all that he can really do.

  4. I think Amir feels guilty about wanting to go to school for writing because it goes against Baba's wishes and soon Baba will be gone. However, Amir pursues his dreams as a writer and publishes his first novel. Along with that, Amir feels guilty for losing contact with Hassan once he went over to America. I think America made Amir realize that he can pursue any dream he has with the amount of opportunities he has in America. It also made him value his family and his friends who are still over in Kabul a little more. Rahim Khan was not doing well and Amir went all the way back to Afghanistan to see him before he passed and he also went to see Hassan before he passed as well. I believe that Amir now is better than the little boy in Kabul. The little boy who lived in Kabul was jealous and envious of Hassan because Baba was giving him just as much love and cared for him as much as he cared for Amir. Now, I think Amir appreciate Hassan more especially after losing contact with him for so long. I do think that Amir can be good again, and I think he is already better than what he was. When Baba, Hassan, and Rahim got sick he appreciated them a little more when he realized they were not going to be around forever.

  5. After reading chapter 16 there are many thoughts going through my head on Amir's struggle with his own guilt. The disappointment that Amir faces is that he and Soraya should have had kids. I think Amir should have not told Soraya her disappointment. It makes Amir not truly loving to Soraya. America has changed Amir in many ways. For example, there is a quote in chapter 11 that describes his adventure in America. The quote is "America was different. America was a river roaring along, unmindful of the past. I could wade into this river, let my sins drown to the bottom, let the waters carry me someplace far." Amir believes he is moving forward and never looking back. He could just forget about his past here and be swept up with the rest of the crowd forgetting about everything except for what is to come. My opinions about him have changed since he was boy in Kabul in many ways. For example, when he was in Kabul he was doing many bad things, and he wanted to please his father in many things he did. When he came to America he wanted to become an English major, because he wanted to prove to his father that this was a good job. He also felt bad about putting the Afghani bills under Bab's mattress. He knew it was wrong, but he still managed to do it. I believe Amir can be good again, because he has accomplished many things since he came to America. He is also receiving an excellent education. His father feels more proud in the things he does now since he came to America.

  6. My feelings on Amir have changed after chapter 16. I feel that deep down inside Amir he wants to changed he just hasn't gained the courage to at this point and time. I feel that later in the book he will get the courage he needs to make Baba proud for stick up for himself. I think that America has changed Amir drastically because tragically his father dies and I think that his fathers death ignites a spark inside of him that wants him to be good again and when he gets the call from Raheem its ignites the spark even more and now he is on his way back to Afghanistan. I think that Amir can be good again if he can be the man he needs to be and stand up for what is right in this world and do everything he has been wanting to do for awhile.

  7. I believe, with the time that Amir spent in America, he learned how to forget about what he saw in Afghanistan. He spent this time of his life by finding his wife, marrying her and then taking care of Baba. America changed him in a good way I believe. He was able to change and experience life without the guilt of what had happened to Hassan hang over his head. He is able to live a slightly normal life many miles away from his hometown where there is civil war and hatred all around.

My opinion on Amir has changed since he was a boy in Kabul because I thought he was a jerk for not trying to stop the bullies from raping Hassan. I know realize that Amir regrets that all of the time and wishes that he would of done the opposite and helped him. When Amir got the call from Rahim Khan and found out that he had a way for him to be good again, I truly believed that there is a way that Amir could truly be good again.

  8. My thoughts have changed very little at this point this far, he still is unable to live up to admit t about the day he watched Hassan get sexually assaulted and just watched it and never was able to tell anyone. I understand he was a young boy but he still is yet to say anything about it to anyone which gives me the sense of guilt on himself. Amir needs to live up to his mistakes and make things right with Hassan before it becomes too late to be forgiven for not helping Hassan.
In my opinion America has changed Amir for the better by learning a whole new way of life compared to to Kubul life. It has shown him that different races can get along with each other and not be looked down on because of having friends from different races. Amir has matured up a lot the past years from being in America. I believe Amir moving to American is going to make him “good again” from the different culture he is around now.

  9. I think that before Amir went to see Rahim Khan, he was happy with his life and did not feel guilt anymore. Amir had pushed any feelings of guilt he had to the back of his head where it could not creep into his mind anymore. Amir was happy. He had got married, he had his own house, and he went to school and became writer. Amir had four of his books published. every thing was going great for Amir in his new life in America.
My opinion of Amir has not really changed since he went to America. I still think that Amir still feels guilty for what happened to Hassan and still blames himself for what happened; however Amir now misses Hassan and wonders what he is doing in his life. Amir wonders if Hassan is married and has children, if Ali is still alive. Amir misses his old friend and wishes to see him again. I believe that Amir can be good again if he rekindles his friendship with Hassan and they put the past behind them for good.

  10. My thoughts on Amir is the same as what I thought of him at the first time. Because he was a little boy and bad things happen in his life. Like watching his best friend get rapped from three guys. That would be very hard on a little boy like him. I know if I was him I would not say a think.
I think that American has Amir a lot. i think it made him more like a man than anything. From were he grow up with hate and raisemy in his life. He know is not with hate and don't care what color of skin is his friend. that is way i think he has stayed the same.

  11. My thoughts on Amir have changed some. I think this because when Amir was a young kid in Kabul, Afghanistan, and when all of the events went down like Hassan getting attacked in the alley that he did not know any better and that he was in shock. I feel like he did the wrong thing but I also feel like most young kids would have done the same thing in that situation just because the shock of the situation. So my thoughts on Amir have changed a little but not by very much.
I feel that being in America has changed Amir a lot because It is just a better place for him to be. in Kabul there was a lot of violence and bad things happening but in America there was peace and it was mostly calm compared to Kabul, Afgahnistan. So I think that America has changed him a lot as a person.

  12. My thoughts on Amir's struggle with guilt is he deserves to feel that way. He is not a very good person for not helping Hassan. Hassan was always kind to him and a good friend. I think being in America has changed Amir. America is different from Afghanistan you are around different people and they do things differently so it has an influence on the way he is now. America is changing him into a better person.

My opinion of Amir has not changed since he was a boy. I still think he is not a good friend and he doesn't have courage. I think he could be good again being in America influences him to be better and it seems like he is trying to do things right. He realized what he did when the incident with Hassan happened was wrong. I believe he will change and become a better person.

  13. My thoughts about Amir have not changed after reading chapter 16. When he was a little kid he had no idea what was right and what was wrong. He was living through a struggle and did not know how to over come it. When Hassan took off after the kite he was excited but when he found Hassan in the alley getting raped and beat up, Amir did not know weather to step in or not and when he chose not to he felt bad for his friend. Amir really didn't know what took place when he saw Hassan in the alley getting harassed. He was in complete shock and decided to stay out of it.
I believe America has changed Amir in many different aspects. He is gradually gaining his father's trust and he is feeling better about himself. Amir is becoming more mature and knows what is best for him. He sees how everyone has moved on with their lives for instance, Hassan is now married and has kids. America was a big change and upgrade in Amir's life.

  14. My thoughts about Amir is he has not changed after reading chapter 16. When he was twelve he didn't know how to react to what had happen to Hassan. He knew that it is was wrong for him to not tell anyone. Amir did what every twelve year old boy does, stands there and lets it happen with out doing anything about it. Amir didn't want to get beat up or have a bad reputation.
I believe America has changed Amir for the better. He is started to gain the trust of his father again, he got married, they are trying to have a baby. He finally sees that everyone is starting to grow up.

  15. My thoughts about Amir are different because he is realizing what he should have done. Amir feels the guilt again and I think when Amir and Baba moved to the United States he grew up and realized his responsibility. He also met a girl and ends up marrying her after Baba dies. Amir understands what is going on in Afghanistan still and decides to go back.

In my opinion of Amir now is that he has matured and starting to face his problems. The trip to Pakistan will clear up most of his guilt. Amir can still be a good man if he is truly sorry and Hassan forgives Amir's mistake that still haunts him. Amir would handle the situation differently if it happened to him now.

  16. My thoughts are that Amir is good person deep down because he still struggles with his decision not to help Hassan and the way he treated him. America hasn't changed him he still depends on his father and likes to read and write. My opinion is that he's mature a bit. Yes, I think he can become good again if he apologizes and admits his faults.

  17. Guilt is an awful thing to deal with; it just nags at the back of your mind trying to pull you down into a crashing spiral. Even the smallest wrong doing, if it’s against your morals, can keep a bitter tight grip on your memory. For Amir, not standing up for Hassan was extremely against his personal morals, so the guilt was suffocating. I can’t imagine how it must have felt, especially at such a young age; and overtime it must have warped and developed into something he was just afraid to remember.
While living in America, Amir has finally begun to grow up and into himself. By that I mean he may still be afraid of not getting Baba’s approval, but he is willing to pursue his wants and dreams. The younger Amir would have never pursued writing even though he loved it. I believe much of what changed Amir was living with new kinds of people and beginning to stray from his own customs a little bit. Personally I believe Amir was as good hearted at 12 years old, as he is at 22 years old. The fact that he didn’t stand up for Hassan makes him no coward in my eyes. The biggest change his strength of will power. So I don’t believe Amir was ever bad; however, in his own eyes he may have viewed it differently.

  18. My thoughts about Amir have changed. I felt like Amir felt really guilty about his decision he made but after talking to Rahim and moving on in life he didn't really care about Hassan as much. He got everything he wanted like Hassan leaving Kabul so he would not feel guilty anymore.
I Believe America has changed Amir because after going to school, becoming a writer, and getting married he did not even give Hassan a thought. I do not think Amir can be good again. He made a big mistake. Although, Amir thinks about Hassan now and he was scared at that moment everything after the fight he did to Hassan, like the money and watch, I believe will never change the person he really is.

  19. Amir should have stood up for Hassan in that alley way, yes but he was to young to know what the consequences and the enormous guilt he would experience after the accident. My thoughts on Amir have changed a a little bit in the fact that he feels so bad for Hassan and wants to meet with him and apologize for his actions when they were so young. With him feeling the tremendous guilt that he does it leads me to believe he is sorry and can be a better person. America has changed Amir in the way that it made him grow up and realize that he let Hassan down that day and needs to make it right with him again. I do believe that Amir can be good again, everyone should get a second chance and this is Amir's second chance to make things good again.

  20. Amir should of said something to stop what was going on. Hassan has stood up for Amir so many times that it was disappointing to read that Amir didn't step in to help. Baba would of been more proud of Amir for standing up for his friend rather than getting the blue kite. In my eyes Amir is not the friend Hassan should have. Hassan would of gave his life just knowing how much the kite meant to Amir.
Amir feels guilty. In his travels to America Amir has grown up a lot. Amir knows that he need to make it right with him and Hassan again. I think sometimes people need second chances, and I think this is Amir's chance to get back his friend he left behind.

  21. I think Amir should have done something about the incident with Hassan in the alley way but I think he realizes now that he messed up and he should have stuck up for his friend and I think he feels bad and feels awful for letting Hassan get raped like that but it did disgust me when Amir just stood there watching them do that to him. My thoughts on Amir have changed just a little bit because he wants to meet up with Hassan and apologize and come out and say that he saw it but didn't do anything about it. I think being in America has changed Amir by realizing what he did and that he truly feels sorry for what he did and he wants to make things right between him and his friend. I think maybe Amir could be good again but that has to take a long time for what he did because if I was in that situation I wouldn't want to be forgiven especially if I just stood there and watched and didn't do a single thing about the incident. But I think Amir can become a kind hearted and better person in the future.

  22. I think that Amir blames a lot of what is going on in his life on the fact that he treated Hassan badly when he was a child. For example Amir and his wife are trying to have a baby, but their attempts have been unsuccessful so far. Amir thinks that that may have something to do with the way he treated Hassan and Amir feels guilty about it. That is why he feels it is necessary to meet Rahim Khan to make things "good again".
I think that America changed Amir. When he was in America he discovered love and started a family. He is a man now and was living in a new place where the slate could be wiped clean and he enjoys that fact. My opinion of Amir has changed since he was living in Kabul. He is a fully grown man now and is more mature than he was when living in Kabul. I believe that if Hassan and Amir are true friends that there is a way they can make it "good again".

  23. Amir had a least step in to help his friend from getting beat up in the ally. Yes, he did not step in when Hassan was getting beat up but he was little and did not know what to do about those things. America has changed Amir because know all he is thinking about is himself and he does not care about Hassan anymore.

  24. i think that Amir should have done something about Hassan that one day in the alley. But I feel that Amir wants to change deep down inside but is scared too. I feel that since Amir and Baba have moved to the united sates he has matured more. he has many responsibilities now since baba has died. he has a wife which he marries when baba passes. it surprises me that Amir goes back to Afghanistan even after knowing what has all changed there.
America has changed Amir because he goes to college now. Amir doesn't feel the gilt anymore since he went back to Afghanistan. he knows that if that incident happened with Hassan now he would have helped him be safe.

  25. Amir became a man as he moved to America. America changed him because he learned how life is different in America from life in Kabul. However he still carries the guilt for not helping Hassan that day. The guilt that will always chase him by just hearing Hassan's name. He later realizes that there is still a chance to get rid of his guilt and make things right. He finally agrees to face his problems even if he is scare to face them.

  26. My thoughts on Amir haven't changed much but before he went back to Afghanistan I think he was happy with his life. he has a wife, and a home the only problem he is having is that him and his wife are trying to have a baby and some reason they cant. but I think going back to his home town changed him because he see how much it has changed because of the Taliban. I don't think that he will ever let go of what happen in that ally way because he knows he could of did something about it that day.
