Hassan, the Kite Runner

At the end of chapter 7, Amir witnesses the attack and rape of Hassan after Hassan has run down the final kite of the tournament for Amir. Why doesn't Amir step in or help? What is he thinking as he witnesses this? Discuss your opinion of Amir's actions.

  1. Amir doesn't step in or help because he is afraid what Assef might do to him if he steps in and stands up for Hassan. He is thinking that Hassan is not his friend and he thinks about what Assef said about how whenever Baba has company over, Amir never includes Hassan in any of the games, just when Amir is by himself is when he plays with Hassan. In the end, Amir runs away and leaves Hassan. I think it was a cowardly thing to do. Hassan always stood up for Amir so he should have done the same for Hassan.

  2. I believe the reason that Amir did not step in to help Hassan when he was getting raped because he was scared. As he was witnessing the attack and the rape he was thinking about all of the times that Hassan had stuck up for him. I believe Amir did not do the right thing and he should of helped Hassan, even if it meant giving up the kite that Hassan ran down.

  3. Amir does not step in to help Hassan because he was afraid to get hurt. He also thought about what Assef has said about Hassan only being a Hazarra. Amir was a coward and ran away unlike Hassan did when Amir needed him earlier in the book. Amir is thinking of what Assef said when he is contemplating on running or helping and because of that he ran away. I do not agree with Amir's actions because Hassan helps Amir when he needs it and has always been there for him.

  4. I feel that Amir did not step in to help Hassan because he was mostly scared and frozen with shock. I do not believe that Amir didn't step in because he wanted it to happen to Hassan, they are best friends and even though Amir gets jealous of Hassan's relationship with Baba I don't think he would ever let hurt come to Hassan. I truly believe that Amir was simply scared that Assef might come hurt him if he tried to step in.

  5. Amir does not step into the attack to save Hassan because Amir is scared of what could happen to him if he were to step in. Amir thinks of good times he had with Hassan and how Hassan had always stood up for Amir no matter what. When Amir realizes that he can not stand to look at this scene in front of him anymore, he decides to turn around and walk away. After Amir saw Assef and his friends take off, Amir returns to the alleyway and pretends that he did not see anything and asks Hassan where he has been. Amir is pretending like he never saw anything that had happened to Hassan so that he can try an ignore the guilt that is starting to eat him from the inside out. Amir feels guilty and wants to talk about it, but he continues to hide it from everyone else.

  6. Amir did not step into help Hassan because he was scared the same thing was going to happen to him. Amir ran away from the situation and he should of stayed and stood up for Hassan. As the attack was going on Amir was thinking about all the times Hassan stuck up for him. Amir should of stepped in and helped Hassan, but its a hard situation to be in. Amir did not want what was happening to Hassan to happen to him.

  7. Amir does not do anything because he is worried about what will happen to him if he gets in the middle of it all. Amir is thinking about what Assef said about Hassan being a Hazarra. Amir ran away unlike Hassan always did whenever Amir needed help. Amir decided to run away instead of helping Hassan due to what Assef told Amir. I strongly disagree with Amir's actions because Hassan has always been there for Amir and Hassan is like Amir's brother so Amir should help him.

  8. Amir must have been absolutely horrified by such a sight. The three boys were his constant tormentors always trying to get one up on Amir. At several points, Amir states that he truly believed Assef to be sociopathic. Amir knew that alone he would not have stood a chance, and would most likely have gotten both himself and Hassan beaten. It would not have even been heroic to step in and try to stop them, because a hero knows what battles can be won and what must be lost. It would have extremely foolhardy to try to intervene. I think he was also scared by what he heard the boys say to Hassan, and how sure Hassan was that they were friends. Amir is constantly battling with how he should feel towards Hassan. He knows that society says Hassan is his servant and should be treated as such, but his experience and heart tells him that Hassan is a friend. With all of that going through a young child’s mind, he cannot in anyway be blamed from running in terror. I think Hassan was smart in not trying to stop the boys, but I think he left for the wrong reasons, and should have acted differently after the incident.

  9. Amir stands and hides a bites his hand and watches for awhile. He can not make himself go out and try to help and eventually runs away. Hassan sticks up for Amir every time they get caught up by the bullies. Amir is afraid to get hurt is a big reason he does not go in to try to help Hassan. After it happens Amir and Hassan don't talk about it and Amir doesn't bring it up because he is trying to hide for taking the coward way out.

  10. Amir did not man up and face the proamble he was like getting way from it. He was scared to stand up for Hassen. He thinks that he dose not have that good of friendship with Hassan and he thinks about what Assef said about Baba has company over Amir never includes Hassan in the game. Amir and Hussan plays the game. this made Amir unset and runs away. I think is was not the right thing to do. Hassan always had his back throw everything.

  11. I think that Amir did not step in to save Hassan because he was at shock and scarred of what might have happened to him if he would have tried to save Hassan. Amir starts remembering all of the good times that him and Hassan have had in the passed. Amir doesn't want to look at the situation so he turns and walks away. I believe that Amir did the wrong thing in this situation. He could have help Hassan and if he would have then maybe they would have had a closer relationship after that. Amir was just in shock I believe so he did not know what to do in the situation.

  13. The reason that Amir didn't step in because he has problems standing up for himself and others. Later in the book there is a part that Baba shows how he can stand up for himself and others when they are on a bus fleeing to Pakistan. Amir will learn eventually but until then he will not be standing up for himself or others.

  14. Amir does not step in and help because he is afraid to. He doesn't think that he will be able to help him. Also he thinks he will get beaten along with him if he tries. Amir ends up walking away and leaving him alone. I think Amir should have helped him. It was a terrible thing for him to do.

  15. After Amir witnesses the attack and rape of Hassan after Hassan has run down the final kite of the tournament for Amir, he does not help Hassan for the reasoning of being scared something bad will happen to him. Such as him getting raped or assaulted. Amir witnessing Hassan getting attacked only made Amir scared if they would do it to him. Although it would be scary witnessing that happen, I believe Amir should have definitely stepped in and helped Hassan especially after what Hassan has all did for Amir. Like running down his kite and making Amir the great kite flyer he is to this day.

  16. After Amir witnesses the attack and rape of Hassan has run to go get the final kite of the tournament for Amir, he doesn't help Hassan because he is afraid and worried that something bad might happened to him such as getting raped or assaulted or maybe even abused. I think Amir is so scared because he probably has never witnessed this before plus it could very well happen to him. I understand that Amir was scared to witness this but I feel he should have done something like hit the guy with something to prevent Hassan of getting raped.

  17. Amir witnesses the rape of Hassan after Hassan has gotten the final kite for the tournament. he didn't help him because he was scared because he didn't want to get hurt. when Amir saw Hassan getting raped it just made him scared because he might get assaulted. I feel that Amir should have stepped in because Hassan has always stood up for Amir and this was his chance to do the same.

  18. When Amir witnesses the rape of Hassan he doesn't help him. I think he doesn't help him because he is scared of stepping in and they might do the same to him. They could beat him, rape or even worse. In all I believe that he was scared, in shock, and didn't know what to do.

  19. Amir didn't want to step in because he doesn't know how to stand up for himself and especially others. It would be absolutely horrifying to witness something that extreme. He doesn't want anything to happen to him so that is why he doesn't help Hassan.

Amir doesn't step up to help Hassan because Amir is afraid of what happened to Haasan, might happen to him, but worse. Amir just witnessed his friends attack and was to scared to do anything other then protect himself. I think that Amir did the wrong thing by not helping his friend. Hassan has done a lot for Amir and helping his friend was the least he could have done for him.

  22. Amir doesn't step in to help Hassan because he was too scared and didn't want the same thing to happen to him. While he was witnessing this he was contemplating saying/doing something about it. He also thought about the look on Hassan's face, and how it reminded Amir of the goats they'd kill each summer.

  23. After the attack and rape of Hassan, after Hassan runs down the final kite of the day for Amir, Amir does not help Hassan out because he feels frightened. He is scared that if he sticks up for Hassan right now he might get himself in some trouble. Amir generally sticks up for Hassan but when he is getting raped and attacked Amir does not want to get involved because he does not want to get raped or attacked. Instead of just being a witness, I believe Amir should have stepped in and helped a friend out, especially after everything Hassan has done for Amir.

  24. Amir doesn't step in or help because he's scared of what will happen to him if he in return. As Amir witnessed he thinks of ways to justify not helping. I think Amir was wrong not to help. Everyone admires Baba so I honestly don't think Aseff would rape him and if he did, he would have a harsh punishment to pay. I also don't think Aseff would rape Amir because of Amir's place in society and because he's Baba's son Aseff's reputation would be tarnished and he would never be able to out live that.

  25. Amir does not step into the situation because he is to afraid to get in the middle of it and get beaten up and get punished like Hassan did. Amir witnessed Hassan's attack and was speechless. If it was Amir get abused then Hassan would at least try and step in to help his friend, but Amir is sort of selfish and jealous of Hassan.

  26. Amir doesn't step in because he is afraid that he would get hurt. he thinks of Hassan as a sacrifice like a goat getting killed to provide for food. he noticed that Hassan would rather fight to keep the kite than having Assef taking it. Amir makes the decision on weather making his dad proud or saving Hassan. He decides to pretend he saw nothing just for his fathers acceptance after winning the tournament. I think Amir is learning a valuable lesson. To stand for other people, even if he sacrifices himself. I think he made the wrong choice because the thought of not doing anything about Hassan getting rapped, will chase him forever.

  27. I think Amir did not step in the situation and help, because he was afraid of what would happen to him. After he was witnessing the rape he was thinking about all of the times that Hassan had been there for Amir. Amir treated Hassan terribly, because he never included him in the games they played at Baba's. At the end of the chapter, Amir runs away and leaves Hassan by himself. I think this was a awful thing to do, because they have been best friends for a long time, and he should of stayed there and helped him after all the thins that Hassan has done for him.

  28. Amir does not step in because he does not want to deal with any of that stuff and he is scared to step in. Amir just watched because he thinks that Hassan is trying to be better then Amir. Amir was scared to get hit and he thought he could not stop it.

  29. Amir doesn't step in because he is scared of Assef and what he might do to him if he did step in. Amir was thinking to him self maybe if said he kept looking for Hassan that he would get of the hook as playing it off like he didn't know what happened. I think that Amir should of stepped in because Hassan has done so much for Amir like take the blame for every thing that Amir has done wrong, or because he was trying to protect Amirs kite that is the reason he did get raped in the first place. In my own opinion Amir is a really bad friend and I think he should of did something to stop the rapping from happening.
